Pork Jerky

porkjerky1

Sticky and sweet and good to eat. (I can’t promise that I won’t write another rhyming sentence on this site, but I can promise that you won’t read another one in this post. You’re welcome.) This Singaporean pork jerky is a convenient snack to nibble on.

While I was viewing the third photo on my computer screen after transferring it from my camera, I noticed something on the plate besides the pork jerky pieces. Look again…can you see it, too?

The sticky coating on the jerky had gotten onto the plate, which reminded me of how I avoid sticky fingers while eating this snack. My suggestion: Cut across the top of the pouch, then push the jerky pieces out from the bottom. Push out, bite, chew. And repeat.

I haven’t found any non-Asian jerky I liked. I guess growing up, I got used to eating the Asian ones that were a bit sweet.

Chris: You should give Asian-style jerky a try sometime. I think it’s quite different tasting than American-style jerky.

Annie: The best non-Asian jerky I’ve found is sold at a local farmers’ market. I like it because it tastes like meat. Aside from being sweet, being meaty-tasting is also why I like this Singaporean pork jerky.

I do make asian style jerky. It’s not pre-packaged one; it’s make to order with no added preservatives and MSG :)

Actually, I didn’t recognise what this was until I looked closer. I think we call it bak kua in Singapore; it’s barbequed pork that we usually eat during Chinese New Year. I loved it as a kid…actually, I still do.

J: Oh, I didn’t know barbecued pork (pork jerky?) is usually eaten during Chinese New Year. (It’s been fun reading your comments and finding that even though we live so far away from each other, we’ve eaten the same or similar foods.)

We normally buy those freshly bbq-ed ones and they taste better than the packed ones. There are a lot of different flavors..and also the bacon ones which i know many like them. we eat them any time of the year but somehow it’s a must-have during CNY..really long Q just to buy them..lol! :)

Faithy: I’ve had fresh Asian-style jerky once before, at a mall in Richmond, British Columbia. It was so long ago I can’t recall how much superior the taste was compared to the packaged ones. And bacon ones?! I know I’ve never tried those, but I want to!
