Cantonese Glutinous Fried Rice
There are two words I’m quite fond of: speedy and meal. Combine the two? Hello! In this case, it’s ‘speedi’ and pertaining to Cantonese Glutinous Fried Rice. Some people may recognize this item as a standard dim sum—a Chinese meal comprising light savory dishes and pastries, served with tea at restaurants—offering. I love eating it, but since I don’t go to dim sum that frequently, I often crave it and other dim sum staples.
I have to say, the name of the item on the box is wrong. Change the ‘Fried’ to ‘Steamed’ and it would be correct. Glutinous rice, also known as sticky or sweet rice, is usually steamed in a bamboo basket with Chinese sausage, dried shrimp, shiitake, ground pork, salted eggs, or peanuts. With that knowledge, could this item be any good?
The pouch. I know some of you are thinking this is all sorts of wrong, food that comes in a pouch like this. I understand.
10 minutes later, after doing option A. I fluffed the rice with a fork and sprinkled some freshly sliced green onions on top. The rice really needed those onions and the packet of soy sauce (probably leftover from takeout sushi) I added, because it was bland. And just look at that lone shiitake. Sad. Not even the two pieces of Chinese sausage helped; everything tasted pretty flavorless and mushy. Suffice it to say, I’ll keep eating this item only at dim sum.
Mmm…There’s this thing called Doll Dim Sum. Might just be the brand, I don’t know. Orange packaging. It’s pretty small. There are three in a pack. It’s vegetarian glutinous rice wrapped in leaves. Very savory and awesome.
For the one that you bought, it didn’t come with a packet of red chili sauce? I remember there’s a kind that has that with it.
Lian: Is the Doll brand of dim sum frozen items? If so, I’ve seen them, but haven’t tried them. I want to try the Doll shrimp rice rolls.
The Cantonese Glutinous Fried Rice didn’t come with any seasoning packet, which is odd, considering how much it needed extra seasoning.

Yeah, the Doll Dim Sum is in the frozen section. So yummy. I rarely get it though. It’s never on sale. ;-; (Supposed to be tearful face, haha).
my mom makes this occasionally, and i’ve had that package before too. this style of sticky rice is actually stir-fried raw first, and then you slowly add water to it, and then you steam it. so i guess neither of you are wrong!
