Fresh Strawberry Napoleon Cake, Let’s Be Mild Coffee

I’m sure many of us have heard not to grocery shop when hungry because who knows what our empty stomachs will tell us to buy (because aren’t we thinking with our stomachs and not our minds at that point?).

So when I found myself in this situation at an Asian supermarket over the weekend, I took care of it, Cindy-style.

By having a piece of Fresh Strawberry Napoleon Cake from the Chinese bakery in the food court of the market, before I started shopping.

There are two things I like best about the cake and frosting parts of Chinese cakes: they’re light…

and not overly sweet.

As for the strawberry topping, it looked better than it tasted. But the cream made up for the fruit’s not-quite-that-delicious taste, as it usually does.

And what’s cake without coffee? A can of Korean coffee, in this case.

Let’s Be Mild. Now that’s a marketing line I haven’t heard before.

Huh? Anyway, the coffee was mild (weak), which was fine since I was drinking it alongside eating a piece of cake. But if I was consuming it on its own, I would prefer something stronger and sweeter.

For a quick caffeine fix, we love this brand and strength. They do have a stronger brew also.

I found you through the Pioneer Woman. And what timing! We just came from Vancouver and our first trip to the T&T market. It’s all Asian, all the time! We have a local Asian market that I thought was a decent size but T&T is where it’s at! We loved it. The kids found flavours of Hi-Chews they didn’t even know existed, and the selection of different ‘teas’ was awesome. In the end, we went back 3 times in 2 days. And they had family sized boxes of Pocky, and lots of Panda cookies, but the best was the bakery, the kids each had a different dessert, a tiramisu, a strawberry mouse and a cheesecake. I picked up at least a dozen bbq pork buns! Fresh ones. We can’t get those here! Thanks for the great site!

Diane: It’s good to know that this drink comes in a stronger brew; thanks for letting me know. I liked it fine, but would probably get it in the stronger brew next time.

Kelli: I LOVE the Asian restaurants and markets in Vancouver (and Richmond), especially T&T. It’s been several years since I’ve been to that market, but oh did I have a great time exploring it, too. I didn’t try anything from the bakery section with the cakes, but did buy several different kinds of pastries. My family and I would literally spend the whole day eating whenever we went to Vancouver/Richmond–dim sum in the morning, lunch at a noodle joint or cafe, snacks at a mall, dinner at a restaurant, and then wrap up the long day with freshly made tofu dessert at a hole in the wall. Good times! Thanks for the reminder.

Sooki: Yup; the frosting is light enough so that you don’t really feel guilty for eating it. A lot of it. ;-)

Juju: Now we know it comes in two different strengths of brew. :-)

The strawberry cake looks so tasty! I miss Asian bakeries. They were all over in LA and San Francisco but now I’m living in regional Queensland so they’ve become practically non-existent. :(

Pademelon: Oh, I’m sure there are plenty of things in Queensland that I’d love to have available here.

My friends and I found a canned coffee w/milk at Asians stores in CA called “Dr. Brown’s”. It is definitely not weak.

Forgive me, maybe it’s the fact that I’m male….. but there’s something just ever so slightly, ummm………. suggestive about those strawberry slices………

Okay, I’ll go sit in the corner now…………

Haha, DUDE, they’re just strawberry slices! Yeah, go sit in your corner! J/K.

Cacoyote: Do you mean Mr. Brown Iced Coffee? I’ve seen it in Asian stores, but haven’t had it in years. I do recall it being strong, though.

Alexander D. Mitchell IV: Um, I’m sure you’re not the only person to think that those strawberry slices resembled something else. That’s all I’m sayin’. ;-)

    Lian: I have no excuse.

It’s not a male thing Alexander…I had the same thought and I’m female. Sugared strawberry slices tend to be a little suggestive looking, especially when the slices are cut thick. Perhaps that’s part of the reason they’re considered a “romantic” food. ;)

Yes, that’s it! Mr. Brown’s Iced Coffee. So if you need an “eye-opener…”.

Fresh fruit, especially strawberries, can transform any cake no matter how delicious it already is, it can still get better!

    Joanna: I agree! :-)

I usually just go to Dunkin Donuts for my coffee. After reading this I think I’ll take your advice and try some new things.
