Swiss Roll Vanilla Flavour, Cream Bun

I would love it if I loved everything I put into my mouth (that’s what she said. Sorry, Michael Scott is my idol in an alternate universe). Because one thing I hate is to waste calories. I like to make them count, so I consider this a Public Service Announcement.

Do not buy this Swiss Roll Vanilla Flavour. (Before I get to the why, does the image of the rolls on the box also remind you of the Little Debbie ones? I’ll admit to buying them, years ago, in a moment or two of frugality and foolishness. I think Little Debbie products are very sweet, too sweet.)

The dry sponge roll.

Just look at how it cracks with dryness.

Oh, and after looking at the image on the box, does something seem to be missing? Like THE CREAM?! I did mean to shout that, please forgive me.

The “cream” plays a coy game of Peekaboo, staying mostly in the peek round.

Overall, I think this Swiss Roll Vanilla Flavour is very dry and pretty much tasteless. If you value what you waste your calories on, don’t buy this item.

Now this, this is what I’m talking about.

creambun2

Look at that luscious cream. (Did that sound a bit dirty to anyone else? I knew you were a bad influence, Michael Scott!)

A generous dusting of powdered sugar covers this Cream Bun I bought at a Chinese bakery. Everything about this delicious pastry was light—the cream, the bread, the flavors. I could have eaten two more of these buns immediately after the first one, before I felt them in my gut. And they would have been totally worth the calories.

Oh my! That second one looks delicious. We have an exchange student coming from Hong Kong and he emailed me this morning that his mom has packed lots of snacks for us to try. I can’t wait to see what all he has!

Bonny: Okay, first you tell me about your friend in Japan who sends you treats and now you say you’re getting snacks straight from Hong Kong? Clearly I need to make friends with these friends of yours. ;-)

Juju: Yes, this cream bun was delicious! It’s available in all of my local Chinese bakeries, so maybe you can find it, too.

A_foxie_smile: Thanks for the Cadbury’s recommendation! It will help the next time I’m standing in that aisle trying to decide what to get (cupcakes? Twinkies? Ding Dongs? Decisions, decisions.).

Sarah Lynn: I know, right? It’s all about the cream!

Lian: Have you seen this bun at your local Chinese bakeries?

YUM on the real thing. Although those Japanese cake rolls that you’ve profiled before are good, too.

I swear I’m not making that up! :) My friend in Japan is so cool. She has sent all kinds of stuff-even pictures of the sizes of the cups at Starbucks compared to ours! It’s amazing how small they are! I would name the snacks but there isn’t any English on the packages, so she sent them all labeled for me. The only one I can read is Meiji Xylish gum in Oriental Fruits flavor. I sent her lots of “American” candy and she admitted she didn’t like any of it-too sweet. Her favorite American item was the Burt’s Bees stuff, go figure. :)

Our exchange student will be here today and he emailed me that his mom packed tons of snacks for us to try. I’m a little intimidated but will happily try them all.

Bonny: Oh, I totally believe you about your Japanese friend and the exchange student. I’m just envious, is all. :-)

No, I haven’t seen a bakery bun like that before. It’s like a hot dog! Haha, still looks very good though.

Lian: My local Chinese bakeries also sell hot dog buns that look like pigs in blankets.
