Fresh Jujubes

You wouldn’t normally wait until fruit is soft and wrinkly to eat it, right? Well, fresh jujubes are an exception.

Their skins start out a light-green color before picking up copper blemishes.

As each day passes, the skins turn more and more copper-colored.

Until they finally become an all-over copper and shriveled.

Fresh jujubes taste like nectarines that have been eaten too early or apples that have been eaten too late. I want to like them, but everytime I eat fresh jujubes, I find myself wishing they were more something. More crisp. More sweet (they get sweeter as they mature). More juicy.

Besides being eaten fresh, jujubes can also be candied or dried and used in soups, cakes, and other desserts.

Oh, I finally got scolded for taking photos at the large Asian market I frequent. And I have to say that I was a little…thrilled? I’m a sick, sick girl. Chalk it up to having a twisted sense of (blogger) humor, I guess.

Not sure that I’ve ever seen those let alone tasted them. LOL at the picture taking though.

My: I hate non-crisp apples, so yeah, I’m not crazy about fresh jujubes. Oddly enough, their flavor seems to intensify around the pit.

    My and Slammie:
You may be familiar with them in their dried form.

I had jujubes before. Like you, I thought they were like mushy apples. I haven’t had “aged” jujubes before though.

Lian: It sounds like you’ve escaped having to consume herbal soups made with dried dates that were “good for you.”

That I have! I only had jujubes that one time because one of my cousins has a friend who has a jujube tree and she gave her a bunch one time.

I have had Goji berries though! In soup. It’s very good. My mom would usually make wine chicken soup and add those in. Wait…maybe that DID have dried jujubes in it. I wonder. Probably also lotus seeds.

Dandy: I think fresh jujubes are a seasonal fruit, available in the summer and into the early fall.
