Chinese New Year 2010: Dried Persimmon

driedpersimmon1

Another Chinese New Year item, one I’ve always been curious about and finally got around to trying because of this blog. The things I eat for this blog…

driedpersimmon2

Dried Persimmon. The package contained seven pieces.

They were dried whole.

And covered in a white powder.

They reminded me of powdered doughnuts. I’m not surprised my mind went there.

driedpersimmon6

They tasted better than I expected, as I’ve never been a big fan of dried fruits.

driedpersimmon7

Sweet, and kind of like dried figs or prunes. I’m glad I gave into my curiosity, but I’m not sure I’d buy this item again.

I love fresh persimmons but I’ve never tried these. I wonder if I can still find them in Asian stores now that CNY and Tet are over??

Linh: This item didn’t taste like persimmons to me. It may still be available in Asian stores, possibly at a discount because yes, it is after Chinese New Year and Tet.

I wonder if I would be able to find dried Persimon… I want to make Korean Persimon tea and you need dried Persimons for it. =/

Here’s a recipe for the tea.

Those look scary. I feel like I’ve tried them before but I don’t remember.

How about add the chopped pieces to your cookie dough like dried fruit, it’s not bad.

Sonya: Interesting-looking tea! I’ve never thought to add dried persimmons to tea. Hmm, I don’t know where to physically find dried persimmons, other than in Asian markets around Chinese New Year. And you wouldn’t want to use those in this tea because they’re powdered. I did find dried persimmons on Amazon.com.

Lian: I love that you find this item scary looking and not the Instant Natural Jelly Fish.

Chau: Oh, another interesting use for dried persimmons! Your method would lend sweetness and textural contrast to cookies.

Asian Aisle I think if you rinse the powder off the persimon you could use them :)

Sonya: I considered that, but didn’t know how well that would work. It’s worth a try. Maybe you can still find this powdered version in stores; my local ones still had lots of leftover inventory this past weekend.

Well I won;t be able to go before next week ^^ since I am stuck moving out of my apartment. I really don;t have the time to go which is sad. I hope there’s still some left when I am able to go. Maybe I should phone and ask if they have them instead of going there for nothing.

I when I look at that white stuff, I am reminded of mold before I am reminded of powdered sugar. *Shudder* It looks so much better when you cut it open though.
