Umbrella Cookie

I have never cared for the taste of Umbrella Cookies, yet I have always liked their appearance.

Their mocha and cream colors.

And swirls. Lots and lots and lots of swirlsss.

I suppose they are so-named because of their shape.

The same cookie, flipped. It kind of looks like a shell you may find on the beach, only edible. Not that that is really a good thing. Umbrella Cookies are crunchy, with an odd flavor…black licorice…maybe?

Hmm, I’ve seen these before lots of times but you saying they taste blah and black licorice-y actually sort of spurs me on to want to try it more! Good reverse psychology there!
Lian: Someone on LiveJournal guessed that they’re made with anise (aniseed). The package states “spices” as an ingredient, and I could very well see aniseed being one of them. These are the worst-tasting cookies I’ve ever eaten.
I love these! The ones I used to get at my ‘local’ Asian market listed white pepper as an ingredient.
