Black Bean Chicken, Broccoli Beef, and Black Bean Garlic Sauce

Hello! I’m still here, shopping at Asian supermarkets and eating at Asian restaurants. Not too much of either ‘hobby’ during the last two weeks, though, because:

* My city freaked out over three cumulative inches of snow over a few-days period. Yes, you read that measurement right and if you’re scoffing at the number, I don’t blame you.  Cars were abandoned in streets, classes were cancelled, and and and I had to eat my own cooking! It was a terrible snow week. But then it rained, and all was right in my city and grocery shopping/eating-out life again.

* My dramatic-email-writing sister popped out a Thanksgiving turkey. Oops, I mean a Thanksgiving baby. Yes, besides loving to eat, my immediate and extended family also love to pop out a baby or two every year. It’s great for me because it means more kids to cackle at. Anyway, I welcomed my sister and my newest niece home yesterday with a gift bag full of cans of fried dace. And also a bouquet of winter flowers because I’m not a complete food-obsessed weirdo. I think.

So I had my first Asian meal out after the snow, today. And in a city with many viable dining options all I wanted was a simple stir-fry with tender meat, crisp vegetables, and a sauce worthy of spooning over rice.

I would get it, but not before receiving a complimentary bowl of Hot and Sour Soup that accompanies every order at this cafeteria-style Chinese restaurant.

Vegetable, Pork & Leek Dumplings; Dumpling Sauce

Someone wrote me recently saying that she loves Ling Ling Dipping Sauce, yet it’s no longer being sold by the bottle. She asked if I or readers could recommend another similar dipping sauce?

I said fine, I know what it’s like to have a favorite item be discontinued (I’m still upset with you, Sephora!) so let me pick up a bag of dumplings and bottle of dumpling sauce, eat a dozen of the dumplings with the sauce, tell everyone what I thought of the two things, and ask for dumpling sauce recommendations.

This is what I came up with, a bag of Vegetable, Pork, and Leek Dumplings.

Indian Eggplant, Sauce For Spicy Garlic Egg-plant

indianeggplant1

sauceforspicygarliceggplant

There is one surefire thing that sets me in a slight panic, and that is being asked to participate in a potluck. See, I’m definitely an eater, but I’m not much of a uh, cooker. And the thought of someone, other than a small group of relatives and friends, eating my cooking sets my heart racing, and not in a good way. But Internet, I don’t know what it is about you. You’ve got me telling you things I’ve told few, if any, others.

But rather than just confessing another bit of nonsense to you today (wait, I just did that), I’m going to show you something I’ve never showed anyone before—a photo I took…of something I cooked. Gulp.

Sriracha Hot Chili Sauce, Sambal Oelek Ground Fresh Chili Paste

sriracha1

Like salt, sugar, and butter, Sriracha Hot Chili Sauce makes a lot of things better. I like to add a few squirts of it to pho (Vietnamese rice-noodle soup), fried rice, and fried noodles.

When I want a sauce with texture and to increase the tongue-burning factor, I grab Sambal Oelek Ground Fresh Chili Paste.
